Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand named and cited in the answers AI engines give — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Here's how it works, and how to measure it.
- What AEO is, in plain English

What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is optimizing your brand to appear inside the direct answers AI “answer engines” give — rather than in a ranked list of links. When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best option in your category, AEO is what decides whether you're one of the names in the reply.
You'll also hear it called GEO (generative engine optimization) or LLM SEO. The terms overlap heavily; AEO leans toward the answer itself — being the response the engine gives.
How answer engines choose who to name
Answer engines synthesize a reply from what they learned in training plus, for retrieval-based engines, pages they fetch live. They favour brands that are described clearly and consistently across the sources they trust — third-party reviews, comparisons, communities, and your own structured content.
That makes AEO less about a single keyword and more about presence: being easy to understand, easy to cite, and genuinely mentioned wherever the engine looks.
AEO vs SEO
SEO earns a ranked position and a click. AEO earns a mention inside the answer, where there's often no click at all. They share a technical foundation — crawlable, well-structured, widely-cited content — but they're measured differently: SEO by rankings and traffic, AEO by whether (and how prominently) you're named.
How to do AEO
Start by measuring: ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and record whether you're named. Then find the gaps — the sources AI cites for rivals but not you — and close them, either by improving your presence on those sources or getting mentioned on them. Then re-measure. AEO is a loop, not a one-off.

AEO is optimizing your brand to be named and cited inside the answers AI engines give — like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini — instead of ranking in a list of links.
SEO wins a ranked position and a click in Google. AEO wins a mention inside an AI's answer, where there's often no click. They share a foundation but are measured differently.
Effectively yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the same goal — being the brand AI recommends. Citenzo covers both.
With an AI visibility score: ask the engines your buyers' questions, record whether you're named and which sources they cite, and track it over time. Citenzo does this free to start.
